    DeLuca Preserve

    DeLuca Preserve

researchers participating in the bio blitz event at the deluca preserve

DeLuca Preserve — which includes cattle ranchlands, citrus groves, wetlands and forests — is one of the last refuges for the endangered Florida grasshopper sparrow, and hosts many other state and federally listed species such as the Florida panther, gopher tortoise, and the red-cockaded woodpecker.

The property provides a critical wildlife corridor between the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park and the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area. The land is also a conservation focal area for the Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge and Conservation Area. This makes it a rich opportunity for unique research.

Initial projects - totaling $600,000 of investment by UF/IFAS - include:

      •    Characterizing soil-water-microbiome domains as part of an open access database for the DeLuca Preserve
      •    How rangeland bird diversity and abundance respond to grazing management
      •    Planting new improved scion/rootstock combinations from the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center citrus breeding program to demonstrate sustainable and profitable citriculture in Florida
      •    Leveraging Snapshot USA to monitor animal diversity and consequences of oak activity patterns
      •    Vertebrate surveys through mosquito blood meal-derived DNA at the DeLuca Preserve
      •    Mapping and taking inventory of floristic biological, functional, and structural diversity across the DeLuca Preserve using LiDAR and high-resolution airborne hyperspectral imaging
      •    Florida’s fungal diversity: documenting subtropical fungi of the DeLuca Preserve and Archbold Biological Station
      •    An integrated bioeconomic model for wildfire risk, surrounding forest management, and tradeoffs of ecosystem services in the Deluca Preserve

Spanning more than 27,000 acres, the DeLuca Preserve is one of the last natural areas of its kind. The land provides a critical nature corridor between the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park and the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area and is a conservation focal area for the Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge and Conservation Area.

In 2022, about 100 nature lovers visited the DeLuca Preserve searching for animals and plants. More than 1,600 sightings were documented. Of those, 345 species were observed. This "Bio Blitz" helps researchers better understand the wide variety of flora and fauna on the property. In addition, people from agencies across the state get to know the DeLuca Preserve and its importance to Florida.
